My grandmother/mother was a…
My grandmother was a stay at home mother and my mother was a cardiographer for the NHS before becoming a dental practice manager.
I was the first female in my family to attend university before starting my career which is something both my grandmother and mother are very proud of.
They are glad, my nan especially, that I can choose to follow a career and be able to support myself.
Me in a nutshell
In work I particularly enjoy working on new policies and seeing them through from conception to delivery. It is important to understand how these will impact upon key stakeholders and I like opportunities to engage with individuals in the industry.
Outside of work I enjoy travelling and exploring new places, spending time with family and friends, and I read and swim to relax… although not at the same time!
My role
I am a senior policy advisor on seafarer welfare and employment in the Maritime Directorate, Department for Transport. I work closely with industry and the Maritime Coastguard Agency to ensure that seafarers are treated fairly.
Maritime by its very nature is a complex area with many international elements which may impact upon a seafarer such as their nationality (where the vessel they are on is flagged), which country’s jurisdiction are they in, and where are they moving goods from and to.
I find it interesting to see how our policies interplay with all these issues but it can make reaching a solution tricky at times.
If I had a magic wand, what I would do to accelerate gender equality?
I would remove gender roles as a social construct – gender should not be a barrier to roles, tasks and responsibilities an individual may want to assume.
